I’ve written about why Baukjen is an amazing brand before (in this post) but, just as a quick reminder, they’re a sustainable, family-run business that designs stylish clothes in an eco-friendly way. The clothes work loosely around current trends but, they’re actually really timeless – somehow, they look really cool and yet the designs are based on those that re-emerge decade after decade. For example, 70s dresses, dungarees and suiting; staple jeans shapes (boyfriend, relaxed, straight, girlfriend, wide-leg, bootcut/flare); loungewear in wearable colours; etc. Basically, they make beautiful pieces that you will love year-after-year.
Some might find Baukjen’s clothing expensive – but they’re balancing profit with purpose as a certified B Corp, which means they’re in the top 5% of all B Corps, as a “Best for the World™” company. So, it’s built to last and they don’t disregard our planet or humanity in the name of fashion. They’re the kind of company you try once, maybe take a chance on, and end up falling in love with their ethos as much as their product.
They’re clothes you save for, or add to your birthday/Christmas wishlist, or grab during the sales, or make your purchase on the days Baukjen is giving its profits to a charity rather than discounting for the consumer – you’re shopping sustainably while also contributing towards helping others. This particular dress ticks all the boxes and takes me easily from September right through to May. The print and colours are pretty enough for spring but dense enough for the depths of winter. The tie-neck, pockets (yes, pockets!), and tiered skirt keeps fairly relaxed and yet it’s easily dressed up with a pair of heels and a fabulous coat thrown over the shoulders. Lastly – and, again, perhaps most important of all – it has an elastic waistband and is super comfy.
After all that, I’m sad to say this dress is no longer available… BUT Baukjen does this style most seasons in different prints and colourways – here’s a quick link through to their current collection in case you want to take a look around, maybe treat yourself?
