Jason Wu continues his more edgy designs for SS14 and, quite frankly, I’m disappointed. When asked who my favourite designers are, I would normally include Wu in my selection; but as the seasons go by, I find the label doesn’t appeal to me in the same way.
I’m all for a designer progressing and moving his or her label along as they grow creatively and personally, but I think it’s important that they retain their signature style and I’m not convinced that Wu is doing so. The Jason Wu woman seems to have taken a step sideways, from a contemporary Grace Kelly merged with Olivia Palermo to a sharper, 1990s Kate Moss meets Carrie Bradshaw circa season 2. Instead of grown-up glamour, we’ve got polished minimalism. It’s gone a bit athletic too, and we all know I’m not a natural athlete. The clothes are undeniably beautiful, but they’re not for everyone anymore, not as wearable as seasons past. I like structured clothes that make a woman feel fabulous, no matter her figure – now, Jason Wu is all “naked” dresses and plunging necklines, unlikely to look good on women an inch larger than a size 10.
I want to still love Jason Wu, but I’m struggling.
