Beauty Busters: Burt’s Bees Hand Salve

Everyone I know loves Burt’s Bees. It’s such a clean, classic beauty brand which produces simple products that literally do what they say on the tin. Burt’s Bees was was established in 1984 by Burt Shavitz, a beekeeper who made a living selling honey from the back of his truck in Maine. He met an artist called Roxanne Quimby and together they created Burt’s Bees skincare based on the idea that what you put on your body should be made of ingredients that you can spell and pronounce. Almost 30 years later, all that’s changed is the packaging: Burt’s Bees is still a natural skincare company with over 150 products – some classic, some new.
One of the brilliant classic Burt’s Bees products is the Hand Salve, used for hands that are really dry and damaged. The tin says “a farmer’s friend”, so you can imagine the type of hands that the salve is marketed at – a skilled man’s hands! The salve contains beeswax, vitamins and lots of other natural ingredients which will soften tired, over-worked hands, while the sweet almond oil and beeswax give a natural fragrance which will linger all day long. It makes me think of Ryan Gosling in The Notebook – it’s probably how he would smell! Mmm. ðŸ™‚
Burt’s Hand Salve (£9.99) is a lovely product to use, whether regularly or occasionally. It’s oily, but that’s the point – it’s a tin filled with TLC for tired hands. Only a tiny amount is needed and daily use will keep hands soft and supple, whereas a weekly intensive application will rejuvenate cracked, sore hands. Although the Hand Salve is marketed at guys, it’s equally as lush for girls and doesn’t in any way look like a men’s or women’s product – it’s unisex, without being dull. Burt’s Bees Hand Salve is a classic product that, once you’ve tried it once, will become a staple in your bathroom cabinet.
