Inspired by the street art featured in these photos, I was instantly thinking 1990s street wear.
I admit, this is rather an extreme look for someone who usually leans towards classic silhouettes and a fairly neutral colour palette, but it’s hard to ignore the Nineties fashion comeback (ripped blue jeans, Calvin Klein underwear, minimal strappy dresses and sportswear are all the fashion du jour). Somewhat surprisingly, I didn’t feel completely uncomfortable wearing this outfit, which tells me two things; 1) sometimes it’s good to step out of your comfort zone, and 2) 90s fashion is super comfy.
In the actual 1990s sportswear as everyday attire was the mainstay of both men’s and women’s wardrobes; the Gallagher brothers created a worldwide following thanks to their signature Adidas tracksuit jackets (which, technically, they revived from the 70s), while 90s girls followed in the platformed footsteps of Sporty Spice and her perpetual but ever changing tracksuit-bottoms-and-crop-top combos. Being a teenager in the Nineties, this is a trend I can remember all too well the first time around, and so I think it’s best left to the kids this time – but it was kinda fun to re-live my sartorial youth, if even just for a day.
I’m Wearing: vintage sunglasses, Spex Pistols; top, Nike; jeans, Topshop; socks, DKNY; trainers, New Balance.
