John Frieda Root Blur

Alongside my Aussie products, I’ve been using John Frieda Brilliant Brunette collection since its launch many moons ago. As the years have gone by, the shampoo and conditioner now enhance my professional tint rather than my natural colour (ssh, don’t tell anyone), but even a top product designed to preserve colour can’t be expected to keep the greys completely at bay… In between appointments for my colour, I find the silvery greys poking out from within the expertly placed lowlights and highlights, spiralling upwards in a shimmering, uncontrollable bid for freedom. Well, as much as I’m loving my thirties, I’m not quite ready to embrace the grey (though Sarah Harris does a good job of tempting me) – so when I heard about John Frieda’s new Root Blur, I decided to give it a go. Using a tiny wee brush to cover your greys with powder a bit like eyeshadow? It sounds completely insane but it actually makes a lot of sense.

Depending on how I wear my hair, the greys are more or less noticeable. I tend to tie my hair up most days, simply to save time and energy (I much prefer ten extra minutes in bed to a DIY blow dry), which means the greys are easier to see as there’s less movement in the hair – this is where I find the Root Blur most helpful. Once I’ve done my hair (e.g. brushed it and tied it up using my Invisibobble) I simply take the tiny brush, dab it in the darkest powder (the set comes with two tones – one lighter ‘Chestnut’, one darker ‘Espresso’) and apply it to the greys. It works; the chocolatey colour is easily applied to the individual strands of hair without making it claggy or sticky, and because it’s a powder and applied with a brush there’s much more control, so you can build up the colour naturally, using the lighter shade to add depth. When I step back from the mirror, my colour is more powerful and my face looks brighter. Instantly, my ‘up do’ feels a little bit more glamorous.
