Milan Fashion Week: Dolce & Gabbana AW14

I absolutely adore everything that Dolce & Gabbana do, especially their past few seasons. I fell in love with the romantic Sicilian fantasy they evoked with the white laces worn over substantial underwear in SS11 and, come SS12, I bought the first high street version of their fruity dresses I could find.  Last season it was the the fiery, festive red lace and mosaic embellishment that had me writing ‘get the look’ pieces and this spring sees the delightful continuation of lace, embellishment and a gorgeous polka dot flippy dress. Sicily is proving a great source of inspiration for the Italian dream team.

The design duo’s latest offering to the fashion world is equally as enthralling: AW14 is a whimsical world, punctuated with the elegance and sensuality of Sicily. The cartoonish foxes are my new favourite thing (more so than the much hyped Lagerfeld accessory at Fendi) and – thanks to the womanly silhouette Dolce & Gabbana are famed for – I desperately need to get my hands on a Dolce dress next season. The only trouble is which to choose.

What appeals to me every season with Dolce & Gabbana is their ability to change season without losing their signature style. Each show brings new designs, new fabrics, different accessories, etc, but the aesthetic remains the same: turning-heads sexy, elegance, personality, femininity and longevity. Dolce & Gabbana bring us new clothes that fit with the trends, but that also stand the test of time thanks to the classic silhouettes (think the signature pencil skirts and dressss, but also the A-line, which is going down a treat at Dolce just now) and wearable colour palettes (primarily black, white, red, metals and flirty prints). What keeps us coming back for more is that we always see something new (from skin-baring lace and crochet to embellishment and now applique) without forgetting who the Dolce & Gabbana woman is. Each season sees an overlap, a re-design of something we adored the previous season, making it easy for us to try something new – without stepping out of our comfort zone.
