I simply had to take my new-to-me denim jacket for a spin at Dawson Park while the cherry blossom trees are in full bloom. If you haven’t been yet, go now – they probably have about a week left before the petals fall.
Back to the jacket. I used to have two Topshop denim jackets; a white one which I wore from the age of 12 to 14, and a distressed denim jacket which I wore non-stop in the early 00s, with either wide leg trousers or denim jeans. I loved it, but as I grew older and my style developed, it disappeared from my life, I can’t recall how or when exactly. And although I never replaced it over the years, I have always thought a soft denim jacket is a timeless approach to trans-seasonal outerwear.
I’ve been searching for something to throw on over dresses and t-shirts for ages. Though I love a blazer, sometimes it can feel too formal; I also love a cardigan or knit, but these can often feel too prim. I’ve tried quilted jackets, both utilitarian khaki and cottage-core floral, and none have felt just right.
Like an epiphany, I suddenly wondered why I hadn’t tried a denim jacket again. I think I had put it in a box, locked away and labelled 1990s/2000s. But denim jackets aren’t just for teenagers and twenty-somethings. They’re for everyone! There’s not much else that quite ticks the modern-classic box than denim, and it can either be comfortable and understated or more structured and elevated.
So I found myself on Vinted having a lovely conversation with the seller of this jacket about the fit, the material, etc. I paid £15, she posted it, I washed it, and I’ve worn it almost every day since. I love it with my yoga leggings and a crop top, over a cute summer dress, and here, teamed with blue jean flares and a neck-scarf (a new look for me, but all the cool girls on Instagram are doing it).
There’s nothing better than feeling like you’ve found a forever piece for your wardrobe, that I’ll probably pass down to my kids. It’s an American brand, the softest denim ever, with a few worn down areas which add to its relaxed vibe. There’s even an inside pocket! Practical and cute, that’s the best way to shop – especially when it’s second-hand, thus environmentally-friendly.
